Course Description:

During this course students will further develop Spanish language skills established in Levels I-IV. They will learn consolidate and practice using all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. This course will combine advanced composition in Spanish as well as intermediate literary analysis with a focus on Spain and Latin American History in order to better understand the texts read in the course. This course will be based in the discussion of current events, the arts, history and literature and their interaction with society and politics with an emphasis on oral and written communication.

 

Objectives: At the end of the course, students will be able to perform the following actions:

  1. Hold discussions about politics, history, literature and the arts
  2. Debate
  3. Give a discourse in Spanish
  4. Read and understand Spanish language texts
  5. Understand cultural differences

Structures:

  • Review of all tenses
  • Review of indicative, subjunctive, imperative and conditional modes
  • Sentence linking and connecting words

  1. The "Encounter": 1492
  2. History: The Caribbean
  3. History: Mexico
  4. History: Central America
  5. History: South America
  6. The case of the Natives: Social problems today
  7. Slavery and AfroLatinos today
  8. Immigrants and their impact on society
  9. Religion and its social impact
  10. Tumultuous reigns: Politics in Latin America
  11. The arts

Performance Evaluation:

Upon request, student's progress will be evaluated through the administration of tests, midterm and final proficiency test. The tests will rate student's performance using the ILR proficiency skill level description. In order to receive a rating of 4, students must show mastery of all previous levels and 75% of the tasks practiced in this course. If they are performed with fluency, ease and ability to handle complex situations in a role play and use more complicated sentences in their discourse, students may earn a rating of 4+.
