Course Description:

During this course students become more aware of precise uses of vocabulary, they will continue learning and practicing idiomatic expressions and developing sociolinguistic competence. They will have ample opportunities for discussions where they will use complex sentences and structures. Their fluency of Spanish language becomes more professional and will be able to handle a broad range of topics and situations. This course combines advanced composition in Spanish and beginning literary analysis while at the same time reviewing important grammar topics.

 

Objectives: At the end of the course, students will be able to perform the following actions:

  1. Talk about means of communication: newspapers, television and radio
  2. Make hypotheses
  3. Express possession
  4. Discuss movies and entertainment
  5. Talk about what would happen
  6. Express how long something has been going on or how long ago it was completed
  7. Give advice and make suggestions
  8. Talk about what had happened or would happen
  9. Describing the government
  10. Expressing political opinions and points of view
  11. Discuss current political topics

Structures:

  • The imperfect of the subjunctive
  • Possessive adjectives and pronouns (long forms)
  • The conditional and conditional of probability
  • "Si" clauses
  • The subjunctive: indefinite and nonexistent antecedents
  • The relative pronouns "que", "quien" and "lo que"
  • "Se" for unplanned occurrences
  • Passive voice
  • "Pero" versus "sino"
  • “Por” vs “Para” – review
  • Subjunctive vs Indicative and Infinitive
  • Professions

Performance Evaluation:

Upon request, student's progress will be evaluated through the administration of tests, midterm and final proficiency test. The tests will rate student's performance using the ILR proficiency skill level description. In order to receive a rating of 2, students must show mastery of all level 0+, 1, 1+, 2, 2+ and 6 tasks practiced in this course. If they are performed with fluency, and the students show familiarity with idiomatic expressions and are capable of handling complex situations with a good command of the Spanish langauge and grammar rules, students may earn a rating of 3+.
