Course Description:

Portuguese Level I is a course designed for beginners, in which they will be introduced to the Portuguese learning process. The course will provide numerous activities oriented to facilitate adult learning in order to develop enough proficiency for real interaction. The students will be guided to perform role plays from scripts, and also they will have opportunity to observe and record verbal and nonverbal interaction between two Portuguese Speakers. At the end of the Basic I (Level I), students learn vocabulary up to 500 words, names of basic objects, answer simple questions relating to familiar situations, name of family members, weather expressions, days of the week, time of day, they will be able to communicate by using words and phrases.

  • Days of the week, Months and Seasons
  • Definite and indefinite articles and gender of nouns

  • Adjective form, position and agreement
  • Subject pronouns and the present tense of "to be" >> "Ser" and "Estar"
  • Summary of the uses of "ser" and "estar" 
  • Telling time
  • Form of yes/no questions and negation
  • Interrogatives (question words)
  • The present tense of regular -ar verbs
  • The present tense of "ter" (to have) and "ter" expressions
  • Possessive adjectives
  • The present tense of "ir" (to go) and "fazer" (to do; to make)
  • "Estar" and the present progressive
  • The present tense of -er, -ir and -or verbs
  • The present tense of stem-changing and irregular verbs
  • Introduction to formal commands
  • Direct object and direct-object pronouns
  • "Saber" and "conhecer" (to know)
  • “Ir” and expressing the future
  • Prepositions

Performance Evaluation:

Upon request, student's progress will be evaluated through the administration of tests, midterm and final proficiency test. The tests will rate student's performance using the ILR proficiency skill level description. In order to receive a rating of 0+ (Elementary Proficiency) students must show mastery of 16 tasks practiced in this course. If they are performed with fluency, ease and ability to handle situation in a role play, students may earn a rating of 0+ (Elementary Proficiency, Plus).
